The Highest Lottery Jackpot in History

The biggest lottery win ever was a $1.586 BILLION Powerball jackpot awarded in 2016. Yowzah! The massive jackpot was divided between three winning tickets, one in California, one in Florida, and one in Tennessee. That means each winner was entitled to about $528 million. Wowwie, that’s a lot of moolah. Say goodbye to your day job because you’d never have to work another day in your life if you didn’t want to!

Ever Wonder What Kind of Cool Things the Biggest Powerball Winners Did After Hitting the Jackpot?

John and Lisa Robinson, winners of 1/3rd of the $1.586 BILLION Powerball jackpot in 2016, purchased their dream house – a ten-bedroom, eight-bathroom masterpiece with a fully decked-out home theater on a private lake in rural Tennessee. Doubt it even put a dent in their share of that massive lotto payout!

2016 TN Powerball Winners

A former actor and monk (yeah, you read that right), Rick Cockrum, also of Tennessee (do we see a pattern?), won a fat Powerball payout of $259 MILLION started a foundation to support performing arts projects in local not-for-profit community theaters. He also donated to health and science causes like Doctors Without Borders.

Jay Vargas of South Carolina won a whopping 35.3 MILLION in 2008. He’s on record as one of the youngest Powerball winners of all time at only 19 when he claimed the prize. He followed his dream of owning a wrestling organization and created a show all about female wrestlers called Wrestlicious Take Down.

Loads of big Powerball winners have gone on record as saying not much will change. But there are just as many who gleefully give notice and clock out of their day jobs for good! Some winners also choose to donate a portion of their prize. A few recognized favorite charities of the lotto jackpot winners circle include Saint Jude, Red Cross, and The Wounded Warrior Project.

Which States Have the Most Powerball Winners?

Indiana leads the pack with the most Powerball Lottery Winners of any state. Guess they’re rich in minerals and flush with jackpot winners! Missouri is right behind them, followed by Minnesota, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.

Has Anyone Ever Won the Powerball TWICE?

Yes! How wild is that!? One lucky guy in Colorado who goes by the name Joe B. bought two Powerball tickets on the same day for the same drawing using his lucky numbers. He bought one in the morning and one in the evening – think he was feeling extra lucky that day? When his numbers were drawn, he won a cool $1 MILLION twice! So he ultimately cashed in on a $2 million win in a single day. That’s so much good fortune in 24 hours; we’d usually say, “hope he bought a lotto ticket,” but obviously, he did!

How Many People Were in The Largest Group of Winners for a Powerball Jackpot?

It’s a little hard to say how many people made up the largest group of Powerball Jackpot winners because some groups claim their winnings anonymously. A perfect example is The Power Pack, a group of winners from Maryland who cashed in on $731.1 MILLION Powerball Jackpot in early 2021. If we go way back, we know of a group that claimed a $214 MILLION Powerball prize as 33 Co-Workers from Seaford (Delaware) back in 2004. Even with 33 people, that’s about $6.5 million each.

Definitely worth whatever their buy-in was!

Everyone Cashes In Their Winning Ticket…Right?

Nope! Believe it or not, a handful of Powerball jackpots have gone unclaimed for years! The largest unclaimed lotto jackpot was a ticket sold in Florida in 2013 with a prize of $16 MILLION. What do you want to bet that ticket ended up in a jacket pocket somewhere or flew off the dashboard on the way home from the store? One more reason to play your numbers virtually if your state allows you to! Hard to lose a digital ticket!
