How do I Play Lottery Powerball?
- PICK YOUR NUMBERS
Select 5 numbers from 1 to 69 and one number from 1 to 26 for the Powerball®. Use a playslip to mark your numbers or mark the Quick Pick (QP) box to randomly select any or all of your numbers for each play. Powerball® tickets cost $2 per play in most States.
- OPTIONAL POWER PLAY
The Power Play® option adds $1 per play; however some States require Power Play to be added to all Powerball ticket purchases for a base ticket price of $3. Power Play can multiply non-jackpot prizes by 2, 3, 4, 5 or 10 times.
- OPTIONAL DOUBLE PLAY
Select States offer Double Play for and additional $1 per play. Double Play gives players another chance to match their Powerball numbers to a separate drawing with a top cash prize of $10 million. The Double Play drawing will be held after every Powerball drawing on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday.
Powerball FAQs
Playing Powerball
Is it possible for the red Powerball number to be the same as one of the five white ball numbers?
Yes. The five white ball numbers and the one red Powerball number are drawn from separate sets of balls, so the Powerball number could be the same as one of the white ball numbers.
The Powerball winning numbers are posted online shortly after the drawing. All results should be verified with your official State Lottery.
Which has better odds — picking my own numbers or requesting a Quick Pick?
Whether you pick your own numbers or have the terminal randomly select numbers for you, the odds of winning are the same.
Add On Features
What is Power Play?
Power Play is an optional add on in most states. It is a prize multiplier that may increase non-jackpot winnings by as much as a million dollars. A multiplier of 2, 3, 4, 5 or 10 is randomly selected during the drawing for determining prizes for the bottom seven Powerball prize tiers. The multiplier will not apply to the Match 5 prize; instead, the Powerball with Power Play prize will be set at $2 million.
What is Double Play?
Select States offer Double Play for and additional $1 per play. Double Play gives players another chance to match their Powerball numbers to a separate drawing with a top cash prize of $10 million. The Double Play drawing will be held after every Powerball drawing on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday.
Players play the same set of numbers in both the main Powerball drawing and Double Play drawing. Players are eligible to win prizes in both the regular Powerball drawing and the Double Play. However, the Power Play multiplier does not apply to prizes on in the Double Play drawing.
Purchasing Tickets
How much do Powerball tickets cost?
Powerball tickets cost $2 per play. The Power Play option costs an additional $1 per play, but is a required purchase in some states. Double Play can be added in select States for an additional $1 per play.
Can I purchase Powerball tickets in advance?
Most States and online ticket couriers allow players to purchase tickets in advance for future drawings.
How late can I purchase Powerball tickets on a draw night?
Powerball sales cut-off vary by state but typically are suspended one hour prior to the draw. Please check with your State Lottery for official sales end times.
Can a Powerball ticket be voided or canceled?
No. Once a Powerball ticket has been printed, it cannot be canceled.
Can I buy Powerball tickets online or by mail?
Depends. Some States allow for Powerball tickets to be purchased online or from a licensed online ticket courier. Check with your State Lottery if they permit online sales and NEVER purchase tickets online from an unlicensed vendor.
Prizes and Claims
Do I have to match the numbers in the exact order drawn?
No. The order of the white ball numbers drawn does not matter, but the one red ball (Powerball) must match the Powerball number on the ticket.
Can I redeem a winning Powerball ticket in any state?
Although the winning numbers are the same in all Powerball states, a ticket must be redeemed in the state in which it was purchased.
I lost my ticket. Can I claim a prize with a playslip or store receipt?
Powerball prizes can only be claimed with a ticket printed from the lottery terminal. Playslips or store receipts will not constitute proof of purchase. Lottery tickets are bearer instruments, meaning the person who presents the ticket for claim will be presumed to be the owner. Always sign the back of any lottery ticket immediately. If you lose a ticket before you sign it, you no longer have valid ownership of the ticket.
Powerball Jackpot
What happens if more than one person wins the jackpot?
If there is more than one jackpot-winning ticket, the prize will be split equally between the jackpot-winning tickets.
Why does a jackpot winner receive a smaller cash amount than the advertised jackpot?
The advertised jackpot is the total amount won if a winner selects an annuity over 30 annual payments (29 years). The amount of cash on hand is actually less than that and the advertised jackpot is what the cash on hand would total if invested over the 29 years. If a player chooses a lump sum, the player does not receive the interest that the cash on hand would have earned over 29 years. Applicable withholding taxes will also be deducted.
What happens if the jackpot is not claimed?
If the jackpot is not claimed within the time frame set by the jurisdiction in which it was won, the jackpot funds will be returned to the states based on each state’s proportion of the sales that contributed to that jackpot.
What happens if an annuity prizewinner dies?
Annual prize payments can continue to be paid to the winner’s heirs, or the annuity may be cashed out by the estate.
About Powerball
Powerball® is a multi-state jackpot game. Drawings are held at 10:59 p.m. ET every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. In most States, sales stop approximately 1 hour prior to the draw time.
Five numbered balls are drawn from 1 to 69 and one numbered ball is drawn from a separate pool of balls numbered 1 to 26. If all your numbers match the drawn numbers, you win the jackpot. The jackpot starts at an amount set by MUSL and grows until someone wins. If other players also match all six numbers, the prize will be shared in equal amounts.
Each Powerball® ticket is $2. For an additional dollar, you can add the Power Play® option to multiply non-jackpot winnings by 2, 3, 4, 5 or 10 times (Except the Match-5 prize, which is capped at $2 million). In some States, Players can add a Double Play feature for a second chance at matching their Powerball numbers.
