About Overall Odds

Overall Odds are the odds to win any prize which includes breakeven prizes and free tickets.

Who Should Use Overall Odds?

Overall Odds are great for players looking for the BEST odds to win “anything“.  It’s not uncommon for 50%+ of winning prizes to be breakeven or free tickets.

MA Lottery Instant Game FAQs

Daily, LottoEdge assesses thousands of instant tickets from more than 35 state lotteries and is often interviewed by media for expert insights. Leveraging our knowledge and data from the Mass Lottery website, we’ve assembled a list of FAQs on instant games.

Strategy

What instant game prizes are remaining?
What does Overall Odds mean?

Overall Odds are the odds printed on the back of instant tickets and are the odds of winning ANY prize, including breakeven prizes. If you see Overall Odds such as 1 in 3.7, that does not mean that if you purchased four tickets that one of them is a guaranteed winner. Overall Odds are the odds of winning any prize, on average, over the entire run of the game.

Lottery players often check the REAL Odds™️, a LottoEdge exclusive. These odds are similar to Overall Odds; however, we strip out all breakeven prizes to show the odds of winning prizes greater than the price of the ticket.

What is the "BEST" instant game to buy?

Players ask this often and are typically wanting to know which game has the best Overall Odds. However, they don’t realize prize level odds are available and can vary greatly from game to game. The “BEST” game to play is going to vary player to player based on their unique prize goals and ticket budget.

Which scratch game wins the most?

Players often differ on what they mean when they ask which instant game wins the most. Let’s take a minute to breakdown two common interpretations:

Overall Odds – The best overall odds means the most frequent wins. However, these frequent wins are due to games being filled with small breakeven prizes or free tickets. While players may see more wins, these wins are typically just be winning the cost of the ticket.

Prize Payout – A higher Prize Payout indicates that a larger percentage of ticket sales are being returned to players as prizes. You will often see more expensive instant games having a higher prize payout percentage than less expensive games.

How long do I have to claim a scratch off prize? / Do instant prizes expire?

How do I claim my winnings?

Tickets

What are the new instant games are there from the Mass Lottery?

All MA instant games released in the last 30 days are highlighted with a “NEW GAME!” tag.

PRO TIP – Many lottery players believe new instant games are “hot” and pay more frequently than older games. The truth is, new game releases sell a lot tickets initially because they are the new, flashy game. This increased volume of ticket sales will naturally result in more winners until ticket sales have normalized.

Which lottery game has the best odds?

We always answer this question with a question – “Best odds to win what?”

The best odds to win depend greatly on your particular playing objectives. Are you aiming to win just enough to treat yourself to a fancy dinner, or are you dreaming of jackpot to set you up for retirement? Each lottery game, whether a scratch-off or a draw game, are different odds for various prizes, making some games more favorable to hitting specific types of prizes.

At LottoEdge we know that every player has their own unique goals and style of play. That’s why we offer more than different 20 scratch-off game rankings, complete with price filters to help you find the games with the best odds. Additionally, we provide Mass draw game odds comparisons for all your favorite lottery games.

How many tickets are on a roll of instant games?

The number of tickets on a roll of instant games can vary depending on the specific game’s price per ticket. Typically, a roll may have anywhere from 20 to 300 tickets, with the total cost ranging between $300 and $600.
